Smartphone unlimited data: a phrase that is nearly obsolete. You may have asked yourself, “Why do I have to be limited on how much I use?” In a complex way, it is all about spectrum and money. Don’t fret, though. I am here to explain why carriers are putting data limits on plans and what you should look for when shopping.
The 4G factor
To begin, 4G costs less to use and can handle more traffic than 3G. This is why you see a huge push towards 4G from the carriers. It takes strain off of the 3G networks, allowing the companies to make space and provide a better 3G experience. As of last month Sprint is the only major carrier in the United States with unlimited data. Why? Sprint has utilized the 4G networks the longest, and with more efficient 3G phones and loads of unused spectrum (the stuff that provides internet), they can offer unlimited for now.
The case for caps
Verizon has gone on record saying the reason they have capped their user data is to prepare the network for future things, so everyone will get a great experience and have a smooth transition to 4G. Personally, I think this is great idea. AT&T capped data a year and a half ago, saying tha there is a spectrum crunch for them and that capping will help. T-Mobile also has put a cap on its data, either setting a certain limit (like the other carriers) or throttling down the speeds of your smartphone after you go over a limit. According to Nielsen Wire, “In just the last 12 months, the amount of data the average smartphone user consumes per month has grown by 89 percent from 230 Megabytes (MB) in Q1 2010 to 435 MB in Q1 2011. “ This is a huge growth per person. Take each person and multiply by how many thousands of people have cell phones. That is a lot of data!
Know your needs
When looking to buy a new phone, simply ask yourself what you are doing. If you are occasionally surfing the internet and checking email, maybe some YouTube, you will be more than fine with a 2GB standard cap. If you are going to be doing multi-media consistently and surfing the web with a lot of email as well, then you might look to higher data caps or Sprint with unlimited. All in all, come to a Best Buy Mobile where our non-commissioned sales consultants will make sure you get your phone, your way, so you’re not left with too little or too much for your needs!
